项目摘要

昨年度に引き続き、ロンドンで在外研究を行った。国立公文書館と大英図書館、LSE図書館を研究の中心拠点として、大西洋貿易に関する統計資料やマニュスクリプト、二次文献調査を行い、ロンドン大学キングズ・カレッジのリチャード・ドレイトン教授らとの意見交換を行った。研究の目的は、18世紀大西洋経済を大きく支えていた黒人奴隷貿易を成り立たせていた対価となった商品(具体的には、インド産綿織物)とその流通過程を、私商人の史料をもとにして明らかにすることであった。とくに、18世紀末から19世紀初頭にかけて、インド産綿織物の卸商人として活躍していたトマス・ラムリー商会の販売記録簿や往復書簡を分析した結果、インドから輸入された綿織物が、ラムリーを介して、リヴァプールの奴隷商人の手に渡り、西アフリカに再輸出されていたのか解明することができた。それによって、イギリスの大西洋奴隷貿易の終盤においても、アジアと大西洋を結ぶ商業ネットワークが重要な役割を果たしていたことを明らかにすることができた。大西洋経済における金融制度の研究課題が残っていたが、ロンドン大学政治経済学院(LSE)の博士課程に進学することになったため、2011年9月をもって、日本学術振興会特別研究員を途中辞退することになった。研究成果としては、4月末にカナダ・モントリオールのマギル大学インド洋世界研究所で開催された国際会議で口頭発表を行った(報告題目:Indian Cotton Textiles as a Global Commodity:The Case of the British Atlantic Slave Trade)。他方、研究ノート「イギリスの大西洋奴隷貿易とインド産綿織物-トマス・ラムリー商会の事例を中心に-」が、『社会経済史学』第77巻3号に掲載された。本稿では、イギリスの大西洋奴隷貿易が大きく成長した理由を、黒人奴隷の対価となった商品の供給の面から分析し、とりわけインド産綿織物の流通に関わった商業ネットワークを論じたものである。
