多くの昆虫種では、オスの残す子どもの数は、配偶者となるメスの数に依存する。そのため、オスは配偶者を獲得するために闘争行動やスニーキングのような多くの戦略を採用する。そして、より多くの子どもを残したオスの形質が次世代に広まり、繁殖形質の進化を方向づけていく。どのようなオスの繁殖形質がどのように進化するかは、その種、集団のおかれる環境によって異なる。そこで、申請者はどのような要因がオスの繁殖形質に影響を与え、どのような進化が生じるのかということを研究目的とした。当年度では、様々な環境要因の中で、オスの成虫密度が繁殖形質の進化に与える影響に関して研究を行う予定であった。しかしながら、実験系統に寄生者がついてしまい、系統の確立、実験を行うことができなかった。そこで、人為的な選択による系統の確立以外で用いられる量的遺伝学的手法を用いて巣の繁殖形質の進化について実験を行った。アズキゾウムシの複数の地理的系統を用い、系統間の繁殖形質と分散形質の投資の違いを調べた。実験の結果、オスの繁殖形質と分散形質との間には遺伝的なトレードオフが存在し、繁殖形質へ投資したオスと分散形質に投資したオスでは、それぞれ繁殖に有利になる環境下が異なることがわかった。これらの結果から、オスの繁殖形質と分散形質の投資量への選択は、個体の密度やライバルの多さだけでなく、空間の複雑さによっても生じることが示唆された。
