本研究は、英領ナイジェリアにおける任意団体活動の実態および表象を検討し、当該地域における「市民社会」の歴史的発展過程を明らかにするものである。本年度は、1880年から1920年に出版されたラゴス新聞の再評価を行うとともに、記念事業団体に関する叙述の分析を進めた。アフリカを対象とした記憶研究が、内戦・植民地支配のトラウマや、国民国家の成立と記憶の問題、さらに口承伝統や宗教行事等を媒介とする現代の記憶化を題材としてきた一方で、本研究の記念事業団体分析は、従来の記憶研究の理論を応用しながら、19世紀後半から続く記念・顕彰行為の歴史的変遷を明らかした。記念事業団体のラゴス新聞における叙述に共通するのは、自らのネイション(ヨルバランド、ラゴス、ナイジェリアなど状況により変化)の歴史を「構築」する手段として記念事業が一翼を担うと繰り返されていた点である。記念事業によって歴史を創造し、目に見えるかたちで記録に残すことが、ラゴス社会の近代化を促進すると主張されており、同様の言説が流通し受容されていた。ここで注目すべきは、イギリスの記念・顕彰行為とともに、ヨルバ民族の記念行為が進歩的な見本として参照されていることである。さらに、2011年7月と11月にはイギリスで、アフリカの出版文化史と教育史に関する文献資料収集とラゴス新聞の内容分析を行った。本研究を土台とした博士論文の口頭試問通過が、本年度における最大の成果であり、通時的な視座から植民地初期のラゴス新聞を詳細に読み込み、一次史料の社会史的分析と新聞記事の内容分析や広告分析を組み合わせた手法と視点の独自性が高く評価された。また、ラゴスで出版された新聞の史料的価値に関する論文を執筆中であり、雑誌への投稿を予定している。
