当該年度は、研究計画調書に記載した内容に沿い、①初期作品に扱われる病いの類型化、②「病い」を接点とした場合に関連性が求められる周辺作家の調査、③具体的作品をもとにした研究発表の三点に注力して研究を実施した。①については、先行研究をもとに「初期」の定義を明確にする試みから着手した。数年の差はあるものの『ジャングルブック』（1893) を中期の作品と位置付ける研究が多数あることから、本研究では①の作業を対象を1893年以前の作品を対象に絞ることにした。この時代の大半を占めるのはインド時代に執筆された作品であることから、自ずと病いは熱帯に特有のもの―日射病、暑さによる不眠、慢性疲労など―であり、特徴として特効薬がないことが示された。初期の作品に登場する病人が物語中で全快する事例がほとんどない理由はここにあると考えられる。②については obsession に目を向けて obsession に関して接点のある周辺作家を探してみた。obsession を選んだ理由は、2023年度の研究で扱う後期作品において obsession にとりつかれた登場人物が多く描かれているので、当該年度から関心を深めていくことを狙った点に求められる。探した結果、目に留まったのはジョウゼフ・コンラッドであり、彼の作中人物にみられる病的なobsession とキプリングの登場人物が患うobsession との相違点の洗い出しを行った。③については、『王になろうとした男』(1888年）を取り上げて論文発表を行った。同作品は荒唐無稽な冒険譚ですますことができそうな小説であるが、登場人物、特に主人公のドラボットの心の闇はコンラッドの『闇の奥』のクルツや『ロード・ジム』のジムといったobsession を病んでいる登場人物たちと重なるものであることを、彼が憑りつかれてしまった王国建設を視野に入れて検討した。
