本研究は、宮城県北部における謡(うたい)の伝承のプロセスについて、音楽教育学の視点から、教育的・社会的機能を明らにするものである。研究対象とした宮城県北部は、江戸期に藩主が能に力を入れていたため、謡の伝承が盛んな地域である。研究対象とした地域は、(1)登米(とよま)地方、(2)田尻(たしり)、岩出山(いわでやま)地方の3地域である。研究内容は、第一に、文献調査と各地域の保存会会員への聞き取り調査に基づいて、各地域の歴史をたどりながら三地域における謡の伝承の解明を試みたことである。特に、各地域で使用されている謡本には教材としての重要な特徴があることを指摘し、その謡本及び謡が実際に生活や儀式の中でどのように取り上げられていたかを考察した。さらに、謡が学ばれた「道場」の教授内容や方法の特徴を取り上げ、謡が一人前の成人になるための必須の教養であったことを指摘した。第二に、伝承の歴史と未来をつなげるために、「今」を生きる人々にとっての謡のもつ意味を明らかにするため、保存会会員にアンケート調査と聞き取り調査を行った。謡の学びを地域における音楽教育の営みとしてとらえ直し、その分析から、「文化的な営みへの参加」、「教授法における伝統と変化するもの」、「個別的な追求」、「協同的な追求」、「謡の持つ豊かな教材性」、「地域文化の継承と生成」という6つの視点を提示した。その結果、学習者が自己を見つめ直して成長し続けていく過程と、集団での高め合いによって、謡の学習は、幅広く教養を身に着け、全人格を磨くことにつながることが明らかになった。さらに、次の世代へ創造的に文化を発信することで、人、地域、謡(音楽)のかかわり合いの輪が広がり、新たなコミュニティを生成することができることを指摘した。このような研究成果を、博士論文にまとめあげた。
