The establishment of standard curriculum for science education is need for improvement of the quality of primary school teacher training. To assess the requirements for the standard curriculum, we considered if teaching contents for the elementary schools including observation and experiments which cover the items specified in the government guidelines for teaching science could be taught within the hours in university classes. We found that, although the items of physics and chemistry could be covered in seven university class hours, teaching the items of biology and the earth sciences in the same class hours was found to be quite difficult. This shows that the items specified in the government guidelines for teaching physics, chemistry, biology and the earth science cannot be taught in two credits (four units) as specified by the current Education Personnel Certification Act, and that an additional credit (two units) must be required. We showed some new teaching materials whichi are effective for primary school teacher training in universities.
