Analysis of Production Structure of Universities in Japan

本研究以技术效率、规模经济与范围经济为衡量标准，探讨日本大学的成本结构。利用日本218所私立大学（1999年和2004年）的数据，我们发现：1)潜在可降低的成本在13%到49%之间；2)几乎所有大学都存在规模经济；3)除了一些非常大的大学外，存在范围不经济。

This study aims to investigate cost structure of Japanese universities by measuring technical efficiency and the degree of scale and scope economies. Using data on 218 private universities in Japan (1999 and 2004), we find that: 1) potentially reducible costs range from 13% to 49%; 2) scale economies exist for almost all universities; and 3) scope diseconomies exist except some very large universities.
