Transcriptions in task-based language teaching: Focusing on utilizations of communication strategies

Communication strategies (CS) were introduced in task-based language teaching (TBLT) to improve learners' strategic competence, which is widely accepted as one of the communicative competences. Students reviewed their conversation by transcribing their audio-recorded conversation. They also self-evaluated their conversations and wrote their perceptions about their conversation. I analyzed the usages of CSs by means of their recordings, transcriptions, self-evaluations and perceptions.The results indicate: CS learning in TBLT was useful to improve communicative competence; improvement in CS utilization showed characteristic changes depending on the kinds of CSs; and significant correlations were found between some kinds of the CSs. From these results, introducing CSs referring to some correlations will contribute to learners' positive CS use and improvement of communicative competences.
