マルセル・プルーストが『失われた時を求めて』の中で、オノレ・ド・バルザックの作品をどのように利用したのか検証した。一例をあげるならば、『失われた時を求めて』の主要登場人物の一人シャルリュス男爵は、バルザックの中編小説『カディニャン公妃の秘密』(1839)と『骨董室』(1837)に描かれる登場人物になりきっているとプルーストは書いているが、この意味を理解するためにプルーストがシャルリュスを描いた箇所とバルザックの二小説を精読した。このバルザックの二小説は必ずしも蒐集家やコレクションを大きく扱うものではないのだが、上の調査の結果、シャルリュスが物に対する欲望と少年に対する欲望を類比的にあっかっていることが明らかになった。さらに、プルーストの小説の中で、ゴンクール兄弟に言及するテクストが果たす役割についても検討した。例えば、ゴンクールの『日記』(1856-1896)の模作がプルーストの小説の最終巻『見出された時』において果たす役割は、これまで模作というスタイルに注目する議論がもっぱらであったが、本研究は模作として提出された『日記』が皿などのコレクションを主要な内容として語っていることに着目し、『失われた時を求めて』の全体の中で、このコレクションが意味をもたされているのではないかと考えた。その結果、小説のべつの箇所でプルーストが創作した登場人物(画家と学者)が同じコレクションを目にしている事実を指摘し、プルーストが想定しているゴンクールの視点とそれらの登場人物の視点を比較することで、前者は資料としてコレクションを描くのに対して、後者は絵画の対象としてあるいは思い出の対象としてコレクションをあつかっていることをあきらかにした。
