项目摘要

本研究のテーマは「1660年から1780年にかけてのイギリス文学・文化に見られる日本の影響」である。日本の1639年以来の「鎖国政策」がイギリスとの交流を完全に断絶するものではなかった、という提言がある。17世紀から18世紀にかけての鎖国時に西洋で流通していた「日本」のイメージは、西洋諸国(特にイギリス)にとって、自国の政治・経済の枠組みを意識的に比較検討するためのモデルであったことが明らかになる。17世紀から18世紀にかけてのイギリスにとって日本の鎖国は、当時のイギリスの重商主義・保護貿易政策を極限まで推進した場合の実例モデルであり、宗教や人種のマイノリティに対して強権的な姿勢で臨んだ場合の実例モデル、さらには中央集権的国家の代わりに封建制度と幕府体制によって国家をおさめた場合の実例モデルでもあった。鎖国時代の日本は、イギリスにとってまさに自国の「ありえたかもしれない姿」を実験的に示す格好の手本であり、活発に議論し分析すべき対象であった。これまでの成果を、東京大学、香港大学、関西学院、そして日本イギリスロマン派学会2013年全国大会において発表した。また、イギリスの「British Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies」(イギリス18世紀研究)、東北ロマン主義研究(TARS)、と「New Directions in Travel Writing Studies」(Palgrave Macmillan, 2015)にこれらの成果が研究論文として掲載され出版される。2014年6月に東京大学で「Romantic Connections」国際学会を開催しました。

This study is based on the theme "Japanese influence on literature and culture from 1660 to 1780." Japan's policy of "locking up the country" since 1639 has been completely cut off. From the 17th century to the 18th century, when the country was isolated, the circulation of "Japan" in the West and the Western countries (especially in the West) was compared with the consciousness of the political and economic organizations of the country. In June 2014, the University of Tokyo launched the International Society for Romantic Connections.
