本年度の研究では、私は素朴実在論(naïve realism)について一貫して研究し、素朴実在論は幻覚の現象的特性を積極的な仕方で特徴づけられないので、幻覚についての消去主義を採用する必要があることを明らかにした。その議論は次のようなものである。知覚経験は現象的特性をもつ。素朴実在論とは、真正な知覚の現象的特性は外界の対象と経験主体の間に成立する知覚的関係によって説明されると考える立場である。だが、幻覚の現象的特性を同様の仕方で説明することはできない。したがって素朴実在論者は、「幻覚においても外界の対象とその性質にみえるものが現れてくる」ということに別の説明を与えねばならない。M. G. F. Martinは、センスデータや表象内容といった存在者に訴えてそれを説明することはできないと論じた。彼の論点は、もしそのような仕方で幻覚の現象的特性を説明すると、知覚のケースにも同様の説明が当てはまってしまうことになり、素朴実在論が維持できなくなってしまうというものである。これに対して、Adam PautzやMatthew Kennedyは、知覚の現象的特性が二重に説明されること自体に問題はないと主張した。私は、彼らに対して次のように反論した。経験の現象的特性を説明するということは、その経験において現れ出てくるものの本性を明らかにすることである。したがって、真正な知覚経験の現象的特性が二重に説明されるということは、その経験において現れ出てくるものが二種類の本性をもつということになるが、それはありえない。以上の議論を踏まえて、私は、素朴実在論者は幻覚には現象的特性は存在しないと考える消去主義を採用すべきだと結論した。また、これに加えて、素朴実在論は知覚経験の現象的特性が〈直示的判断に対して事実的な正当化を与える〉という役割をもつことを認めうるという点についても明らかにした。本研究は、素朴実在論という立場の整合性や認識論的利点について新たな知見を得たという点で、意義深いものであったと言える。
