本研究の目的は、「水俣病」の想起をめぐる文化的な諸形態の歴史性について多面的に明らかにし、近代の言説とせめぎ合う多声的な歴史構築の実践とその動態を解明することである。1. 「水俣」の言説的構築と水俣病患者運動史・証言活動の歴史「水俣」の証言をめぐる文化的・政治的な力と証言活動の変遷について明らかにするために、文献資料調査を継続するとともに、「水俣病資料館語り部の会」や「水俣病を語り継ぐ会」のメンバーへの聴きとり・参与観察調査、そして「水俣条約」の採択過程と水俣の人びとの対応についての調査を実施した。現在これらの結果を分析しているところであるが、未だ成果を得るには至っていない。2. 水俣市における景観やモノを活用した歴史構築の実践昨年度に引き続き、「本願の会」の活動の参与観察調査、ならびに本願の会のメンバーと関係者への聴きとりを行った。とくに会のメンバー一人ひとりの日常的実践から、(過去の出来事や経験を含めた)目に見えないイメージが、自然景観やモノといった可視的な媒体を通じてさまざまに想起される具体的様相を析出することができた。昨年度の知見と併せて考えるならば、このことは、対人関係における言語を介したコミュニケーションだけでなく、自然景観やモノを通じたイメージの想起が、本願の会の人びとの主体形成や石像製作のあり方に対して継起的に影響を及ぼしてきたことを示唆する。現在、これらの知見をより広範な議論のなかに位置づけるために、「物質文化研究」の理論的可能性を検討し、モノの媒体性に着目した歴史人類学的な記憶研究の視角について考察しているところである。
