本研究では英語が抱える課題や不安を乗り越えるためのデジタル教科書教材開発の可能性に着眼し、具体的には文部科学省認定の「英語ノート」および文部科学省検定教科書をベースに、従来からある「一方行型IT教材」に代わる「双方向型デジタル教科書教材」の開発を目指そうとした。本研究代表者が代表を務める日本先端メディアムはすでにこれまでに双方向型のインタラクティブな英語教材の開発研究に取り組み、2008年に我が国初の本格的な双方向型音声認識エンジン搭載の大学生向け英語テキスト教材を開発し、刊行した。この先端的IT教材は、その特性や機能からみて、コミュニカティブな外国語活動を主目標とするこれからの小中高等学校英語教育にとりわけ適していると考えられる。この双方向型音声認識エンジンの長所は、学習者の発信した英語音声を認識し、発音や表現の適切性を即座に判定し、様々のフィードバックを音声的にも視覚的にも与えることができることである。教師の側にとっては、この双方向型音声認識エンジン搭載のデジタル教科書教材は授業運営や学習活動の効果効率を飛躍的に増大する点で、教師の強力なアシスタントとしての役割を担うことができると考えた。従って、本研究ではこれらの知見を基に大学生ではなく小学生が使用するのに有益な双方向型デジタル英語教材の開発を目指した。平成24年度中にもCD媒体でのサンプルを先ずは作成することを目指したが時間切れとなり実現しなかった。
