本研究は、現世でのよりよき生、そして、究極的には来世での救済を求める人々が、自らの生き方を神と社会との関係において構築していく場としてスーフィズム（神秘主義）とタリーカ（スーフィー教団）を捉える。そして、それらが現代の政治・経済・社会的状況にどのように対応しているのか、人びとにとっていかなる実際的意義を有しているのかを明らかにすることを目的としている。タリーカ（スーフィー教団）のシャイフ（導師）は、その宗教的知識や篤信はもとより、カラーマ（奇跡）の発現などを通じて、民衆の崇敬対象となってきた。こうした聖者崇敬は、イスラームにおいて、神と人との媒介という概念を考える上で欠かすことのできない研究対象である。そこで、今年度は、スーダンのタリーカに所属するシャイフや教団員による「媒介者」としての聖者の正当性をめぐる主張と、それに対するサラフィー主義者の批判に焦点を当て、スーフィーとサラフィー主義者の「媒介者」に関する解釈の違いや、スーフィズムにおいてなぜ神と人との「媒介」という概念が重要であるのかという点について明らかにした。
