项目摘要

平成27年度は、ほとんどの時間を博士論文執筆の要となるデータ収集、分析、整理と論文執筆に費やした。本研究の目的は不定代名詞manが古英語期から中英語期まで、そして15世紀に消滅するまでの過程を丁寧に跡付けると同時にその消滅の理由を考察することにある。不定代名詞manは、そのとらえがたい性質から長い間文法家たちの間でも結論が出ていなかった語である。今年度の研究成果はまず第一に"Indefinite Pronoun man in the Transitional Period"という論文を藝文研究という学術雑誌に投稿したことである。これは古英語から中英語への過渡期であり、言語変化にはきわめて重要な意味を持つ。第二に、古英語の聖書におけるmanの用法において新たな知見が得られたことである。古英語聖書の再分析を行い、データを再検討した結果、これまで受動態の迂言用法と言われてきたman構文だが、聖書におけるラテン語とその古英語翻訳(行間注釈、自由翻訳)を検討すると必ずしもそうではなく、能動態でも用いられることが明らかとなった。この場合は不定詞構文とman構文が同じラテン語文を翻訳したものとして併存していることから分かる。man構文は、受動態構文と能動態構文の両方に対応し、文脈によって書き手、読者は解釈する必要があるということが分かる。man構文の解釈は、文脈に大いに左右されるものと考えられる。このように考えると、不定代名詞manは、普通名詞manとどのように異なるのか、その境目がきわめてあいまいであり、つかみどころのない語として認知されてきた。manにおいて普通名詞と不定代名詞の区別は、古英語がラテン語からの翻訳である場合や明らかに普通名詞と解釈できる場合を除き、文脈や読者の解釈に頼るほかはない。不定代名詞の定義についても、博士論文以降で他の不定代名詞も含めて考える必要がある。
