イノベーションの担い手としての人的資本の育成において、大学院教育に着目し、指導教官の果たす役割を定量的に明らかにした。その際問題となるのは、指導教官と学生のマッチングにより内生的に決まることであり、それによって もたらされる自己選択効果に対処することが難しいことである。そこで申請者は、東京大学物理学研究科の学生-指導教官についてのデータをもとに、指導教官が指導の途中で「異動」、「引退」 したことによって、指導教官と学生のマッチが外生的に崩れるというようなデータを構築してこの問題に対処する以下の推定手法で分析した。考案したは推定方法は、 初等中等教育において教員の影響力を測定する方法として開発された付加価値モデルの手法を拡張し、大学院レベルの指導教官から学生への教育指導の付加価値効果を測定できるようなモデルに応用したものである。この手法の特色としては、上述のデータを識別戦略上有効に用いることによって指導教官と学生のマッチングによる内生性の問題に対処したことである。推定の結果、実際に、教員の影響力は大学院修了後直近において有意に存在することが示された。先行研究では、観察可能な研究業績から作成した大学全体としてのレベルが先端研究に関わる人的資本の蓄積に与える影響を分析されているが、一対一の個人レベルで先端研究に関わる教育付加価値効果を、厳密な識別戦略でもって捉えた分析として、本研究は初の試みである。本研究については、さまざまな頑健性の調査やメカニズムについての分析を行い、結果が頑健であり、この研究で捉えられた効果は教員の指導に関わる資質であることを確認した。
