项目摘要

明治20年代に始まる日本神話学の研究動向が、海外布教や教派神道を生み出していく近代の神道史とどのような関係にあるのかを考察した。たとえば明治25年の久米邦武の「神道は祭天の古俗」論文は、神道家たちの糾弾を受け、最終的には帝大の職を失う事件になるが、明治32年の高山樗牛、姉崎正治、高木敏雄らによる「スサノヲ論争」は、日本神話をインド・中国神話と比較することで、神道の絶対性を相対化するような意味をもったが、こちらは、まったく政治問題化することはなかった。その背景に考えられるのは、明治33年の内務省内の神社局と宗教局との分離に象徴されるように、神道なるものが国家と離れて、さらに神社参拝が非宗教的な行為へと位置づけられいく時代動向の変化があった。そのことは、神話学や神道学、国文学などの近代的な学問の成立を意味すると同時に、学的な言説それ自体が「国民ナショナリズム」を作り出していくことになる。それを代表するのが、大正期の神話学者の松村武雄の研究である。ここで神道学と神話学とは相互補完することに至ったと考えられる。一方、同時期に國學院大學の神道・国学の担い手であった折口信夫が、近代的な哲学に発する神道学を批判し、また政府の神社非宗教論を批判する議論を展開していく。それは折口のまれびと・みこともち・とこよなどの民俗学の展開が、「国民ナショナリズム」を形成する近代的な言説とは異なる地平をめざしたことに繋がるものと考えられる。それは折口の学問が、日本国内に留まるものではなく、「外部」の存在を意識していくという意味で、当時のアジア主義や神道の海外布教の動向と関わりつつ、それらへの批判を担う学問知を形成したと評価できるのである。なお、以上の研究成果は「近代神道・神話学・折口信夫」と題して植朗子他編『「神話」を近現代に問う』(勉誠出版)に掲載された。
