本年度は摂関家成立の問題に後宮秩序の観点から取り組んだ。第一に、摂関家成立の前提として藤原頼通の関白辞任について考察した。これまでその経緯を語る史料として用いられてきた『古事談』の説話について再検討し、頼通の関白辞任についてはそれに関わる各政治主体の思惑が交錯し、一元的な決定権を有する者の不在により摂関継承が機能不全を起こしていたという背景を解明した。そして、摂関父子継承が頼通の子息師実以降に軌道に乗ることに、後三条天皇以降の院政の成立という要素が影響していたのではないかと問題提起をした。それを踏まえて第二に、院政期の後宮秩序とそこでの摂関家の位置づけについて検討した。後三条朝以降天皇や院が後宮編成のヘゲモニーを握るようになるが、そこでは天皇の正配についてはまず摂関家の女性が第一候補となり、別の家の女性が入内する場合は院など王家関係者と養子関係を結ぶというのが基本原則であった。つまり摂関家が天皇の姻戚（外戚候補）として特別な位置を占めていたのであり、摂関在任者や経験者が天皇外戚となることが理想とされていたことがわかる。よって、従来摂関家は鳥羽天皇践祚の段階で摂関と外戚の地位とが分離し、天皇との外戚関係の有無にかかわらず摂関が特定の家柄によって継承されるようになることをもって成立するとされてきたが、むしろ後宮秩序の中で特別な位置づけを有していたことが摂関の地位を継承する根拠となっており、摂関家成立の前提であったと結論した。それにより、後三条朝から後嵯峨院政のころまでは王家と摂関家の姻戚関係を重要要素として朝廷の権力核が構成されていたが、鎌倉後期以降摂関家出身女性の立后が途絶することに朝廷の権力構造の本質的な変化が見いだせるのではないかとの展望を得た。
