Lake Van (eastern Anatolia in Turkey) is the fourth largest of all terminal lakes in the world (surface area of 3,522 km², volume of 576 km³, maximum depth of 450 m, max. diameter 130 km WSW-ENE). Caused by the quality of the sediments (annually laminated) and the location in a climatic sensitive region, it is an excellent target for ICDP deep drilling. Following the successful realization of a pre-site survey in 2004 including a seismic cruise and coring campaign for a set of new cores, the main goal of the present proposal is the continuation of multidisciplinary scientific work on short cores (5 m ¿ 10 m sediment depth) including magnetic susceptibility, physical properties, stable isotopes, pollen and spores, and absolute datings. We submitted a proposal requesting ICDP support to hold an international workshop in preparation of the Lake Van Drilling Project. Based on the recommendation of the ICDP Science Advisory Group the Executive Committee is generally willing to allocate financial support for the proposed workshop. The prolongation of our DFG project is needed to produce substancial results both for the ICDP workshop in 2006 and for the final ICDP Drilling Proposal, which will be submitted probably in January 2007.
