本研究では、これまで1960年代後半に盛り上がった社会全体に対する抗議運動である68年運動の西ドイツにおける展開とその余波を検討してきた。その中でも自治的な共同保育所運動であるキンダーラーデンとドイツ社会民主党青年部ユーゾーという2つの運動類型の70年代半ばまでの展開を追った。これらは、68年運動の重要な「後史」に属する。本研究の意義は、これらのローカルな活動に注目し、両者に共通する実践のあり方、およびその実践を正当化させたその時代特有の思考を明らかにしたことにある。本研究では、68年運動以後に政治的な若者がその活動の対象をローカルなレベルに落とし込んだ展開を、「コミューン化/地方政治化」という概念を新たに用いて説明した。さらに、この展開を可能にした彼らの政治的思考に、「ポスト革命的理想主義」という概念を用いて検討した。これらの概念の内容とそれを生み出したダイナミズム、そして同時代的な意義を、史料による実証だけでなく、合理的な論理で説明することを試みた。さらにキンダーラーデンとユーゾーが当時の社会全体の展開と持った関係を検討することで、狭い社会運動内部の独特のダイナミズムを明らかにするにとどまらず、より視野の広い考察を行った。両類型による「コミューン化/地方政治化」は、生活のあり方を自ら決めることを求める市民と、社会の様々な分野への介入強化を前提とする福祉国家制度の拡張と改革という国家機関による、生活の領域をめぐる争いの一部として説明した。社会主義による社会変革の重要性を強調する「ポスト革命的理想主義」は、戦後20年以上続いた未曾有の経済成長が終了し、これまでの政治・社会・経済の運営方法がうまくいかなくなるという不安の中で登場した。それは、社会主義という歴史ある見知った政治的な道具立てを用いることで、将来の不透明性を乗り越えることを目指した立場であったと説明した。
