项目摘要

今年度はウィリアム・モリスとJ・R・R・トールキンの影響関係を、特に美術やデザイン、工芸などの観点から研究した。調査・研究の内容としては、日本での資料調査やテクスト分析を行った他、2018年8月に英国に渡英し、ケンブリッジのフィッツウィリアム美術館でアーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動に関連する展示を見学、ケンブリッジ大学図書館でトールキン関連の書籍を閲覧、オックスフォード大学ボドリアン図書館でトールキンについての展示を見学、大英図書館においてケルムスコット・プレス刊行の書籍の調査を行った。特にオックスフォード大学ボドリアン図書館で開催された「トールキン：中つ国の作り手」展を見学したことはトールキン研究のために大きな意義があった。この結果、これまで注目されてこなかったトールキンの画業を、独自のスタイルを持った芸術作品として評価するべきであること、それらの絵画やデザインから、トールキンの文学作品にも通じる芸術思想が浮かび上がってくること、モリスとトールキンは美術と文学の境界を越境しようと試みた点に共通性があることがわかった。モリスとトールキン両者の芸術観は特に書物芸術に結晶している。上記の調査の成果をまとめて日本英文学会第91回全国大会での研究発表に応募し、審査を通過したため、2019年5月26日に同大会において「書物芸術から見るモリスとトールキン」の題で発表する予定である。また、この研究は博士論文の一部となる予定である。
