项目摘要

本年度の研究における最も重要な成果は、「自由意志と道徳的責任の概念的関係をどのようにして理解すべきか」という方法論的な論点における理解の進展である。本研究は、従来の自由意志論争において、自由意志と道徳的責任があまりに密接に結びつけられてきたことによって自由意志をめぐる論争が不当に歪められてきた、という点を解決すべき課題として定めた。本研究が提案した新しい方法論は、次の二つを基本指針とするものである。①道徳的責任概念とは独立に、自由意志についての日常的理解から出発して自由意志の形而上学を論じる。②「自由意志は道徳的責任の必要条件である」という従来自明視されてきたテーゼを、論証によって立証／反証すべき実質的な哲学的主張とみなす。①の指針に沿って自由意志を探求する方法論は、二つの実質的な帰結をもたらす。一つ目は、「自由意志と決定論の両立可能性」という、近年の自由意志論争においてしばしば軽視されてきた伝統的な論点の復権である。この論点は、自由意志についての日常的理解をふまえれば、自然主義的世界の中の人間像と合理的主体としての人間像という緊張関係にある日常的信念の対立を鮮明に反映した、きわめて重要な哲学的問題である。二つ目は、道徳的責任とは独立の観点から彫琢される自由意志の重要性や意義が、この方法論から示唆されることである。指針②について、筆者は自由意志と道徳的責任の連関を論証すべく、ハリー・フランクファートによる有名な思考実験を、ケーススタディとして定めた。本研究の成果は以下である。自由意志と道徳的責任は、「当非難性」を介して概念的に連関する。すなわち、行為者への道徳的に悪い行為に対する非難を正当に帰属するためには、その非難を行為者が避けることができたという「回避可能性」が必要であり、回避可能性は自由意志を含意する、という仕方で、自由意志は道徳的責任に必要だという主張が導出される。
