项目摘要

2019年度の前半は、昨年に引き続きドイツ、エアフルト大学ゴータ研究所にて客員研究員として研究に従事した。昨年度に得た知見のうち、本年度は1. ジョン・セルデン（John Selden, 1584-1654）の聖書解釈をa. 17世期半ばのブリテンにおける思想状況と、b. ヨーロッパにおける17・18世期の聖書学の文脈に位置付けることを目指した。a.については、セルデンのDe Synedriisにおける聖書解釈と彼の同時代人たちの聖書解釈を比較した。とりわけ、政治的範型としての「ヘブライ人の共和国」についてセルデンや彼の対抗者がどの聖書章句に注目し、いかなる解釈を提示したのかという点に焦点を絞り、De Synedriisの分析を進めた。以上の分析を通じて生じた論点として、セルデンの聖書解釈そのものの特徴を把握することが挙げられる。報告者は、セルデンがヘブライ語・ギリシア語の本文の読解に際して、多くのラビ文献のみならずアラビア語やシリア語といった「セム語」の知見を援用したことに注目した。特にaとの関連において、こうした聖書解釈の方法が政治思想の彫琢においても有意であったのか、という点を論究するとともに、聖書学史というより広い文脈においてセルデンの聖書解釈を分析することを目指した。斯様にセルデンに前後する時代の聖書学者たち、とりわけセルデンら17世紀の聖書学者たちの伝統に自らを位置付けた、18世紀オランダの聖書学者、東洋学者アルベルト・スホルテンス（Albert Schultens, 1686-1750）の聖書解釈に注目することで、初期近代における聖書学史の一側面を検討した。このうち報告者は、アラビア語の知見を聖書学に積極的に援用したスホルテンスに関して複数の英語での報告をおこない、初期近代プロテスタントの聖書学と東洋学の結節点を論じた。
