豊富な蔵書を有するウィーン国立図書館を、2022年8月14日（日）、8月16日（火）～18日（木）、8月20日（土）の計5日間訪問し、資料データを入手した上で分析・考察をすすめた。なお、8月15日（月）は聖母マリア昇天祭で当該図書館閉館のため、ウィーン大学図書館への訪問に切り替えている。前年度の研究実績において、シュトルムの『白馬の騎手』における精神薄弱児「ヴィーンケ」の死に関して、成長しない（できない）子どもに対するシュトルムの悲哀と神秘性を読み解いたが、今回はその背景事情をより強固にする、以下のような知見を得た。19世紀半ばの欧州においては、「白痴」の施設が精神薄弱児のための小規模な教育施設となり、職員や教員は衛生学や教育学的方法に基づいて子どもたちに接していた。生理学的、経験的方法に基づいた教育概念を発展させ、認知能力の劣る子どもたちの教育に携わった人物としては、フランスのイタールやセガンの名が挙げられるが、ウィーンの「レヴァーナ」も精神薄弱児の重要な教育施設としての機能を果たしており、ドイツ語圏全体でも19世紀末には精神薄弱児の学校が多く設立されるようになった。今回の調査では、こうした背景を素地として、教育による「正常」という枠組みが出来上がる過程と、その対立構図として障がいを捉える同時代の傾向を浮き彫りにすることができた。そこから、19世紀の作家であるシュトルムが、「正常」と「障がい」の狭間を小説において意識しつつ、その垣根を解消するために「子どもの死」を描写していることが推測できる。『水に沈む』において溺死する少年ヨハネスに関しては、「子ども」なる存在に対する、大人の憧憬と自責、そして生贄と犠牲という観点から『白馬の騎手』と結び付けて考察できることを明らかにすることができた。
