本研究の目的は、日清戦争以降、清との宗属関係から公式的に解放された朝鮮が大韓帝国成立に至るまで、どのような外交を展開していったかを、日韓関係を中心に考察することで、朝鮮外交の特質の一端を明らかにしようとするものである。日清戦争以降の外交がどのようなものだったかを理解するためには、日清戦争以前の時期との関連性を一層把握する必要があった。2022年度は2021年度よりさらに古い時期を中心に資料収集と精読を行った。具体的には第一に、日清戦争以降に活躍する外交担当者のなかにはアメリカに渡った人物や、対米外交の経験を持っている人物も少なくないため、アメリカに渡った外交使節団について資料調査を実施した。2022年10月14日から韓国ソウルで関連展示会が開かれたので、10月末には韓国に出張し、展示会を見学した。展示会や現地での調査を基に研究調査報告書を東海大学紀要に掲載した（「韓国国立古宮博物館の特別展示『笠子帽（カッ）を被りアメリカに渡った朝鮮外交官の物語』をみて」『東海大学紀要文化社会学部』第9号、2023年3月）。第二に、日清戦争勃発から甲午改革期（1894～1895年）を重点的に研究することによって、本研究への新たな方向性が見えてきた。本研究を始めた際にはロシア要因を主な変数と考え、朝露関係・日露関係関連資料に注目し、研究してきた。だが、その前の状況を一層具体的に把握する必要があると考え、改めて日清戦争期・甲午改革期の資料を収集し、資料を読んでいくうちに、朝鮮と日本との当時の関連性をより詳細に考察する必要があることに気付いた。2023年度も同時期の資料収集及び研究を続け、その成果を学会で報告するつもりである。
