7月25日より10月10日までのイタリア滞在中に、フィレンツェ美術史研究所及びハーヴァード大学附属ヴィラ・イ・タッティ研究所、フィレンツェ国立中央図書館で資料収集に専念した。特に、墓碑の当初のミケランジェロへの依頼から紆余曲折を経てバンディネッリの完成作に至る経緯の確認と図版資料の入手に努めた。その間、9月1日にバンディネッリ作《レオ十世墓碑》《クレメンス七世墓碑》（ローマ、サンタ・マリア・ソプラ・ミネルヴァ聖堂）の細部の撮影と実地調査を行なった。また9月23日にバンディネッリとその工房が担当したフィレンツェ大聖堂内陣大理石浮彫の撮影と実地調査を行なった。3月13日より4月5日までのイタリア滞在中にも、フィレンツェ美術史研究所及びハーヴァード大学附属ヴィラ・イ・タッティ研究所で資料収集に専念した。その間、3月24日に、フィレンツェ大聖堂内陣大理石浮彫を18世紀に写し取った石膏鋳型87点（フィレンツェ北部セスト・フィオレンティーノ、ジノリ工房）の撮影と実地調査を行なった。3月27日には、フィレンツェ、サンティッシマ・アヌンツィアータ聖堂バンディネッリ墓碑の撮影と実地調査を行なった。いずれの滞在においても、フィレンツェの美術史専門誌L’ARTISTAの編集担当者グリエルモ・フォンディ氏と複数回面会し、研究の方向性について助言を受けた。またフィレンツェで活動する文献学者ヴェロニカ・ヴェストリ氏と面会し、《クレメンス七世墓碑》に関する古文書の筆跡解釈およびラテン語銘文の読解について助言を受けた。
