项目摘要

本研究は、中世英文学において「移動」の概念がいかに描写され、そこにいかなる思想が表現され、それがどのように中世人の様々なレベルでの自己の認識を形作っていったかを分析するものである。「移動」の概念を、旅行記のような物理的移動だけでなく、百科事典のような古典古代からの情報の再編纂による知識の移動、地図や写本の挿絵による情報伝達媒体の移動、翻訳・翻案による言語の移動といった面から探求し、そこにまつわる精神や思想の移動を、国家意識、世界観を含む自己認識を中心に読み解き、中世人のアイデンティティ形成に「移動」がどのように貢献したかを研究する。本年は、二つ(あるいは三つ）の論文及び一つの国際学会発表を中心に研究成果をまとめた。まず、６月に国際学会で口頭発表を行った。発表内容は、１４世紀の架空の旅行記『マンデヴィルの旅行記』中に登場するインド皇帝プレスター・ジョンの扱いについてであり、他作品に現れる場合と異なるこの作品での独自性を指摘し、旅行記に描かれる移動、記述や情報の移動と自己認識に絡めて論じた。また、西洋中世から近代の移動の概念を様々な媒体を対象として分析した論文集を編纂（共編）し、中世文学と移動の概念について包括的に論じた最新の研究書として刊行した。移動にまつわる研究の背景や論集全体の内容を簡潔にまとめた導入部を執筆し、この時代の文学研究における移動の概念の重要性を説くと共に、自身の論考では、『マンデヴィルの旅行記』の仏語版と英語版との比較から、英語版の特徴を導き出し、旅や言語の移動とイングランドという自己の認識について論じた。最後に、他のプロジェクトとも重なる内容であるが、百科事典や旅行記を中心に、古代中世ヨーロッパの巨人像の変遷について分析した論を刊行し、そこでも自己と他者の関わりや情報の移動について扱った。
