見知らぬ土地での経験を語る「旅行記」と、他者との区別によって自らを定義しようとするアイデンティティ形成の過程は密接な関わりを持つ。この結びつきは、地理空間の認識が正確な測量方に基づいていない近代以前のヨーロッパの文学作品において顕著である。本研究は、中世後期イングランドで製作された地図や旅行記に加え、空間的な移動を描く中英語ロマンスを分析の対象とし、その中で想像される「移動」が、当時のイングランドにおける国家的、宗教的な所属意識をどのように反映し、また形成しようとするものであったかを明らかにすることを目指すものである。遠方の風物を詳細に記した中世後期の地図や旅行記とロマンス作品を横断的に分析しながら、物語における空間上の移動の描写が単純なエキゾチシズムや異文化への憧れを反映したものではなく、自己定義に必須となる他者の存在を導入しながら、自己と他者の線引きを可視化しようとするものであるという点を明らかにする。プロジェクトの初年度となる本年度は、中世ヨーロッパにおける「他者」の表象について研究を進め、文化的・地理的に異なる人々を描いた中世イングランドの物語を対象に分析を行なった。キリスト教的な世界観や歴史観によって彩られている当時の文書において、特に東方への旅は巡礼としての意味合いを帯びるものであるが、旅を通して自己規定を図る登場人物の様子に注目しながら、物語における移動の意義を検討した。本研究の問題意識を踏まえて行われたリサーチの一部は本年度に出版された『旅するナラティヴ』（知泉書館）に収録された論考において発表済みである。
