本研究は、①160年にわたる合衆国の文学作品で問題化され続ける「人種」とはなにかをテクスト研究で詳らかにし、②一定の平等化政策や司法措置を経てなおアメリカ社会に人種主義が跋扈する理由を考証することを目的としている。またそれを行うに際しては、「エコロジーとしての人種」なる作業仮説／分析概念を用いること、さらにその適用過程で、この概念を理論として練り上げる可能性を探ることを企図している。研究初年度となる令和４年度には、本課題が問題化する政治的政策や法整備で人種問題が片付かない現象の理由を探究すべく、概念整理の作業に着手した。この現象がなぜ起きるのか、それは、人種差別や不当行為が起きる都度に立ち上げられる対処法が、特定者の利害に即した「問題解決型」争点に終始して、理念面での思索が深まらないためである。それを乗り越える道筋を、４カ年の期間で示すために、今年度はまず「潜勢力 dynamism」「アボリション・デモクラシー abolition democracy」「解放への長い道程 long emancipation」という概念の重要性をまとめながら、そうしたものの意義を伝える文学作品、理論についての執筆と口頭発表を行った。まず日本英文学会第94回大会で、「文学の潜勢力――分節を問う、生成を辿る」と題したシンポジウムを企画して、奴隷制廃止後も、ながらく解放されていないとの認識がされている黒人の生の持続の意味をJames Baldwinの著作を介して考察した。潜勢力の出来は、政治運動や実力行使の形態を取るばかりではない人間の抵抗の深遠性と多義性の証左である。この作用を描いた南部女性作家Carson McCullersの作品論と、当該の力をより理論的に解題し、人間個体に現れるジェンダーや人種の問題を考察したJudith Butlerの著作をテーマとした書評論文をあわせて発表した。
