项目摘要

2022年6月に、研修年(2017-18)に実施し未発表であった文献調査の結果を、その後の研究成果と併せてまとめた研究論文を発表した。ロンドン大英図書館ならびにオックスフォード大学ボードリアン図書館における調査時において、「新造物者」の底本がラウトレッジ社の簡約版である可能性が高いことはすでに判明していたが、それ以外に類似の版がある可能性は排除できていなかった。本論文では、19世紀中にイギリスで出版された『フランケンシュタイン』の各版を一次資料として調べた上で、1818年の原作初版と1889年の初邦訳の連載開始までの70年間の空白期間における、作者メアリ・シェリーと本作品の評価の変遷を辿った。特に当初必ずしも文学的評価が高くはなかった原作がいかにして命脈を保ち、遠く日本に到達し得たのかという問題を原作の出版史ならびに戯曲版の上演史から探った。上記論文の執筆時には、19世紀にアメリカで出版された『フランケンシュタイン』各版の調査は困難で、先行研究の二次的情報に頼らざるをえなかったが、2022年10月にニューヨーク公共図書館のプフォルツハイマー・コレクションを訪ねたことで、19世紀の原作・翻案の出版状況、戯曲版の上演史を複数の一次資料で確認することができた。その結果、アメリカにおいても、戯曲版を初めとする翻案作品が、『フランケンシュタイン』を後世に伝える役割を果たしたことを確認することができた。ニューヨーク滞在中、アメリカ・キーツ＝シェリー協会のシンポジウムで研究発表を行い、その際、シェリー研究者らロマン派研究者と意見交換をする貴重な機会を得た。2023年2月には、流通経済大学の三宅雪嶺記念資料館において、「新造物者」研究の一次資料である三宅花圃の『薮の鶯』の手稿（坪内逍遥が添削）を確認したほか、翻訳にかかわる花圃の履歴について新たな事実を確認することができた。
