本研究では、これまで指示詞研究において脇に置かれてきた指示詞の体系性に焦点を当て、「なぜ指示詞は言語普遍的に複数の代替形と統語範疇を持つのか」という問いについて考察する。具体的には、指示詞使用のプロトタイプ的な場面である共同注意場面を、日本語・ブラジルポルトガル語・中国語・英語の4言語にわたって詳細に分析する。この分析を通して、共同注意場面およびそれと言語的談話の接点を丁寧に分析することで「なぜ物理的な存在を間主観化し談話に持ち込む際にこのような体系が必要となるのか」を明らかにすることを試みる。分析対象は、会話参加者が周囲の環境内の事物に視覚的共同注意の焦点を当てる場面である。申請者は、本研究以前に、日本語自然会話の分析に基づき(i) 共同注意確立のためのやりとりは会話においてSide Activity (SA) に過ぎないこと、(ii) 会話の参加者は意図する対象に向けられる相手の注意状態を推定しながら、対象について与える情報量を調整していること、(iii) 情報量の調整のため、指示詞が切り替えられていることを明らかにした。「指示詞の切り替え」は、意図する対象に向けて相手の注意を効率的に誘導するだけでなく、やりとりが今どの局面にあるかを互いに明示する役割を果たしている。本研究では、日本語のみならず、日本語と語族・言語構造が異なるブラジルポルトガル語・中国語・英語でも、実際の共同注意場面において日本語と同様の「指示詞の切り替え」が生じていることを明らかにした。同時に、各言語の指示詞体系における相違点が、共同注意場面の参加者の行動の異なりにつながっていることも分かった。例えば、様態の指示副詞を有する日本語と中国語では「注意の調整」段階で細かな指さしの動きがみられたが、様態の指示副詞を持たないブラジルポルトガル語・英語では、意図する対象をより言語的に描写する様子が見られた。
