本研究は、モンゴル、中国、ロシア、台湾での文献調査とオーラルヒストリー調査から得られる成果を基礎に、毛沢東の後継者と目された林彪を主人公とする「林彪事件」に焦点をあて、林彪はなぜ出国しなければならなかったか、彼の乗った飛行機がモンゴルに墜落した本当の原因、墜落事件の終息をめぐる中モ交渉、モソ交渉などについて、実証的研究をおこない、その全体像を明らかにしようとするものである。2022年度は初年度として、史料の収集とオーラルヒストリー調査につとめた。日本における文献調査は、国会図書館などを中心に、林彪事件とかかわる諸資料を収集し、整理した。海外調査では、モンゴル外務省中央文書館やモンゴル諜報局特別文書館、内モンゴル自治区档案館を中心に、林彪事件および冷戦時代のモンゴル・中国・ロシア関係の資料などについて調査をおこない、「中華人民共和国の飛行機がモンゴル人民共和国領内に墜落した原因についての調査報告」、「中華人民共和国駐モンゴル人民共和国大使について」、墜落したトライデント256号飛行機の遺留品のなかの手書きのメモ、事件の終息をめぐるモンゴルと中国、旧ソ連との交渉などの第一次資料を収集した。また、1971年に林彪事件がおきた時の、モンゴルの国境部隊の当事者、同事件の調査に参加したモンゴル国の当事者の証言などを収集できた。論文「林彪事件再考――モンゴル国の資料を中心に」を執筆し、学術雑誌に投稿中である。
