初年度である2023年度は、当初の予定どおり、1893年にボスニアのレイスルウレマー（イスラムの宗教指導者の長）に就任したアザパギチが、イスラムをめぐるどのような教義・理論から徴兵制の実施をいかに正当化しようとしたのか、さらに移住活動の抑制にむけてどのような施策を当局に提言したのかという研究課題に取り組んだ。その際、①1881年11月の徴兵法発布の歴史的背景を詳らかにするために、ハプスブルク帝国が、1878年7月のベルリン条約と1879年4月のオスマン帝国との協定の締結をへて、イスラム統治の基本方針をどのように定めたのか、②1881年に創設されたレイスルウレマー職にアザパギチが就任するまでにどのような歴史的経緯があったのかを踏まえたうえで、彼が1884年に発表したとされる著作『Risala on Hijra』でどのような主張を展開したのか、を考察した。①に関しては、いわゆる「東方問題」関連の英語・ドイツ語・フランス語・ボスニア語の先行研究および刊行史料を収集・分析しながら、課題の解明に必要となる歴史的事実の整理をまず進めた。そのうえで、オーストリア王室・宮廷・国立文書館に収蔵されているボスニア占領関連の未刊行史料の精読を始めた。本未刊行史料に関しては、数百の文書が複数の箱に分かれており、かつ当時の各種官僚などの手書き文書であるという事情から、解読に時間を要するため、現在も継続して分析を進行中である。②に関しては、アザパギチが著作の中で、ヨーロッパ支配下にとどまることを正当化する議論を展開したこと、加えて、ボスニアのムスリムによるオスマン帝国への移住に反対していたことが明らかとなったが、そうした彼の議論の思想的背景までは十分に把握することができなかった。今後は、この点の解明に重きをおき研究を進めたうえで、①②の成果を総合し論文として公表する予定である。
