本研究は、1917年の十月革命に反対して亡命したロシア人が形成した「在外ロシア」がソヴィエト・ロシアに対して示した政治的態度の転換過程をあとづけ、彼らによるソ連政治体制認識とソ連における一国社会主義体制の形成過程との相互関係とその歴史的意義を、同時代史料に基づいて実証的に明らかにすることを課題とした。本年度は、1920年にハルビンに亡命し、ロシア愛国主義の視点からソヴィエト政権を承認しこれに協力したN. V. ウストリャーロフの対日観と日本とのかかわりを解明することを主要な課題とした。この課題の遂行を通じて、以下のような諸点を明らかにすることができた。（1）反ボリシェビキ政権のイデオローグであったウストリャーロフにとっては、ヨーロッパにおけるロシアの地位の回復が何よりも重要であった。日本のシベリア出兵時にかかわりを持った日本軍当局者との私的な関係においては「親日的」な気分を抱くようになったウストリャーロフだったが、政論家としてまた公人としての彼の国際情勢分析のなかで、日本は副次的な位置づけにあった。（2）コルチャーク敗北後にハルビンに亡命したウストリャーロフは、亡命地でロシアと日本との密接な関係を意識するようになった。そして東北アジアにおけるロシアの国家利益擁護という視点から、日露協調の重要性を新たに認識するに至った。（3）しかし1931年の「満洲事変」以降、日本が中国東北への進出を本格化して同地域のソ連の国家利益を脅かすようになると、ウストリャーロフは次第に日本の行動に対する懸念を強めていった。彼にとって日ソ関係の悪化は、中国東北におけるソ連利害の侵害だけでなく、ソ連側の視点に立った自身の主張を展開できる空間への制約の拡大を意味した。1934年に入ると彼の言論活動に対する圧力が一段と高まりを見せるようになり、最終的に35年3月の中東鉄道売却後に彼はソ連に帰国した。
