初年度においては、「ポスト経済成長期」のオルタナティブな社会に関して、資本主義制度の史的構造や歴史的発展過程を踏まえつつ、学術的な吟味を加えた。19～20世紀にかけて世界経済を牽引してきた資本主義は、修正資本主義や新自由主義といった資本制システム内の変革における攻防を繰り返しつつも、すでに1970年代のローマクラブによる『成長の限界』（1972）やガボールの『成熟社会』(1972) をはじめ、資本主義経済の拡大成長路線からの脱却が図られてきた。折しも2022年は、かかる「成長の限界」から半世紀の節目であり、ローマクラブによって『Earth for All 万人のための地球』（2022）が発刊され、貧困・不平等・エンパワメント・食料・エネルギーの5分野におけるパラダイムシフトが掲げられた。この50年間、国連による人間環境会議、持続可能な開発、地球環境開発会議、社会開発サミット、ミレニアム開発目標、持続可能な開発目標、等々が提起され、持続可能性をキーワードとした様々な取り組みが行われてきたが、世界各地での紛争や戦争を回避することはできていない。また「成熟社会」に関しては、宇野重規が「日本における成熟社会論の知的起源」（『年報政治学』2019）において、1975年の『中央公論』誌上の対談に着目し、「日本型」の成熟社会論における固有の特徴として、地域コミュニティなどの中間的集団を組み込んだ「分権的な社会システム」を位置づけている。さらに斎藤幸平の『人新世の「資本論」』（2020）は、人間の経済活動が地球環境を破壊することを「人新世」と表現し、「脱経済成長」をめぐる諸説の批判的検討を通じて「脱成長コミュニズム」を提起しているが、経済学の概念規定や論理的展開をめぐっては疑問も出されている。このように、経済成長からの脱却をめぐる議論は一筋縄ではいかず、学説研究を継続していく必要がある。
