项目摘要

キリスト教学校修士会（以下、修士会と略記）の思想と実践を考察するため、本年度は、同会の設立からフランス革命期へ至るまでの活動の経緯を辿って、注目点を検討した。ラ・サールが中心となり1680年代に発足した修士会は、彼が亡くなる1719年までに、最初の慈善学校を設立したランスをはじめ、パリを含む国内22都市で、貧民を対象に無償で読み書きとキリスト教を教える学校を同一の方針に従って運営するまでの発展を遂げた。その方針は、ラ・サールが生前に執筆していた『キリスト教学校の指導方針』が1720年に公刊されて確実な共有が可能になった。修士会が1720年代前半にフランス国王とローマ教会から相次いで認可されると、同会の学校は1730～1740年代に国内各地の都市に次々に設けられ、18世紀前半段階でその数は79都市へ達した。修士会がフランス革命までに国内100都市以上に及ぶ初等教育の学校網を築いていた史実は夙に知られてきた。ただし、上述の通り、それは1750年以前にほぼ構築されていた点が改めて注目される。というのも、そうした実態が、1760年代以降に活発化した公教育をめぐる議論の背景となっていた。1763年にレンヌ高等法院の検事長ラ・シャロテは『国民教育試論』で、民衆へ読み書きを教える修士会の学校が社会秩序を台無しにすると指弾した。彼によれば、「社会の福祉は、民衆の知識がその職業以上に広がらないことを求めている」。このような民衆教育観から、修士会の活動が危険に見られたのである。修士会の学校が体制側司法官の貴族から危険視されていた史実は、従来の教育史において、アンシァン・レジーム期の〈小さな学校〉と総称される教育機関が、従順で勤勉な民衆の形成を目指した体制順応の教育の場と見なされてきた点に再考を促す。民衆教育の代表的な担い手へ成長した修士会の思想と実践をさらに探り考察していきたい。
