本研究の仮説は、「近代教育システム」を<国民統合と社会的選別を機能とする人間形成の体系>と概念規定するならば、フランスにおいてその基盤が形成されたのは、革命期以前の18世紀中葉、すなわちアンシァンレジーム末期に遡られる、というものである。日本での従来の研究では、フランス近代公教育の成立過程は革命議会の論議に始まり、その思想的源流が啓蒙思想家の言説に辿られてきた。そうした研究が、革命前の教育の実態へ積極的関心を向けることは少なかったと言ってよい。しかし、本研究が着目したのは、1760年代以降、中等教育改革を推進した高等法院官僚によって、国民統合を目指す学校制度が構想されており、教師たちも教育内容や方法の改革に取り組んでいた史実である。そして、当時、イデオロギー上の立場に関係なく参照されていた理論が、1720年代末に公刊されたシャルル・ロランの『学問論』であったことを明らかにした。さらに本研究は、革命期にはコンドルセらの構想に賛同し、ナポレオン学制へつながる公教育の制度化に取り組んだJ・F・シャンパーニュに注目した。1800年に発表された彼の著作で注目されるのは、革命前の学校教育の在り方を全面的に否定してはいなかった点である。そして彼は、公教育において最も重要と見なす初等教育の制度化を、当時の財政状況に鑑みて、国家・政府に求めるのではなく、イギリスに倣い市民自らが行うように説いていた。この背景には、近年の実証的研究によれば、フランスでは18世紀を通じて、読み書きを教える学校が、地域差は認められるにせよ民衆にも遠い存在ではなくなりつつあったことが考えられる。以上によって、本研究は、フランス近代教育システムの基盤形成が、初等レベルの学校の普及と中等教育の改革という二つの側面から理論の形成と実態の変化に注目するならば、18世紀中葉に認められるという仮説の妥当性を提示し得たと思われる。
