项目摘要

本研究は、20世紀初頭のハワイで活躍した武居熱血（1879-1961）と武居が残した日本人移民居住地の詳細な記録を現代の地図と重ね合わせ、20世紀初期のハワイにおける日本人移民の居住状況及び市街地における日本人商業地区の状況を空間的に明らかにすることを目的としている。武居の生涯（自由移民→弁士→経営者→ラジオパーソナリティ→日系人収容所収監→二世の息子達は米兵として欧州激戦地へ）と、ハワイの日本人町の発展から最盛期（1910から1940年代初め）の状況を照らし合わせながら、19世紀後半から20世紀前半頃のハワイの近代化及びホノルルを中心とする市街地の発展過程における日本人移民の状況を具体的に明らかにする。これまでの研究で渡布前の名前が武居弥作（たけすえ・やさく）であり、武居熱血（たけい・ねっけつ）と改名したことや出身地である山口県下松市での状況などが明らかになった。また、ホノルルにおいては日本人移民に先行して移住した中国人移民の状況とチャイナタウン大火（1900年）による居住人口の人種構成の変化などが明らかになりつつある。ホノルルの発展過程の中で日本人移民がいつどのように市街地に定着していったかを空間的に分析する予定である。ホノルル以外では、ハワイ島を中心に調査を進める。ハワイ第二の都市であったヒロは製糖業によって発展したが2度の津波で壊滅的な被害を受け、「日本人町」として興隆した街区はすでに失われており、武居の地図や当時の写真を使って最盛期の状況を再現する意義は大きい。また、ヒロの北より連なるハマクアコーストのプランテーションタウン、ハワイ島西側でコーヒー製造業で日本人移民が定住したコナ地区についても調査を行っていく。
