コロナ禍の影響により研究計画を変更し、文献研究を中心に進めた。対象地域である竹富島において観光化が進む端緒となった1950年代から1960年代にかけての時期に焦点を当てた。この時期の竹富島におけるもっとも大きな出来事は、急激な過疎化と高齢化の進行であった。この時期に島を離れた人々は石垣島や沖縄島など各地に移住したが、これらの人々のなかには、相互に、また竹富島と様々な形で関わりを持ち続ける人々が存在した。こうした状況のなか、1957年に倉敷民藝館の外村吉之介が竹富島に来島したことは、先行研究において論じられているように、その後竹富島が「民芸の島」として広く知られる契機となる出来事であった。外村以降、多くの民芸運動家が竹富島を訪れるようになったが、これら民芸運動家を竹富島へと案内する仲介的役割を果たした人々のなかには、島外在住の竹富島出身者も含まれていた。島の内外においてホストとゲストの関係を仲介する役割を果たした人々が存在したのである。竹富島の人々は、これらの仲介者を通じて外村らとの交流を深めていった。そしてこのような交流を通じて、竹富島では、織物をはじめとする民芸品の製作が新たな産業として見いだされていった。当時途絶えかけていたものづくりの伝統を復興するとともに、とりわけ高齢者にとって収入源になるようにという理由から、民芸品の製作が推進されたのである。この取り組みは、竹富島における産業としての観光化の端緒を開くものになった。かつてヴァレン・Ｌ・スミスは、観光地を訪問するゲストの数が少ない段階では、ホスト側の地域文化へのインパクトも小さいと論じた。しかし竹富島の事例は、ゲストの数が少ない段階であってもホスト側の地域文化に大きなインパクトが及びうること、その際に、ホストとゲストの関係を仲介する人々が重要な役割を果たしうることを示唆するものだといえよう。
