本研究は、「近現代ロンドンの商業建築の発展に見る都市文化の解明」を目的とし、主に百貨店を中心とした分析から分析を進めている。本年度は、1900年前後の都市の様子が網羅的に把握できるGoad火災保険地図の分析と現地での現存事例の調査を中心として、都市における商業建築の公共性や、地域的特質から生じる建築空間の差異について検討した。「Goad火災保険地図」の性格との保存状況は以下のとおりである。Goad社は1875年に開業され、イギリスの主要都市、およびヨーロッパ、中南米、アフリカの一部地域にまでおよび火災保険地図を作成している。ロンドンにおいてGoad火保図は、シティ周辺は網羅的に地図が存在し、当時の郊外においても、火災の多かった工場・商業地区は地図が存在する場合が多い。地図には番地、階数、屋根形状、天窓、壁の種類、窓の大きさ・位置、防火戸、用途、各種防災設備が記載されている。そのため、建物形状の復元はかなり詳細まで可能と思われる。当史料は、、現在ほとんどの地図がBiritish　Library に所蔵されており、原本は地図資料室にて閲覧が可能である。1900年前後で出版された第１版は網羅的に保存がなされているが、第２版以降は部分的にしか史料が存在しないため、通時的な地区の変化が分析できる箇所は限られる。また、現地での事例においては、計８店舗の残存する百貨店建築を訪問し、開業当初からの改変/残存箇所などを把握することで、歴史的建造物となった百貨店建築の現在における利活用についても見識を深めた。
