これまで説明的文章教材の読みの指導において,学校図書館の活用や読書指導は読解指導の発展的な指導として位置づけられ,実際には十分な指導が行われないということが多くあった。そのことが学校図書館指導や読書指導の不振の理由の一つとなっている。一般的に,説明的文章教材の読みの指導では,文章を正確に理解するための知識や技能の学習を基礎基本としてまず指導した後で,その読解に関連づけて学校図書館の活用や読書指導が行われていた。しかし,これでは説明的文章教材の読みの指導が視野に入れるべき情報処理能力の育成が十分に指導できない。そこで,このような状態を改善するために,読書生活の指導という考え方に基づいて,学校図書館指導や読書指導を学習指導の基礎に置きながら読解指導の能力をつけることが提案されている。また,近年の新しい学力観を生かして,意欲や関心を高めながら読む力を育てるために,多様な表現活動を設定し学校図書館指導や読書指導を組織するようになってきていることが明らかとなった。また,子どもたちが学校図書館で調べ学習などに活用する図書の内,利用頻度の高いまんが形式の図鑑や事典,科学読み物などの図書,ならびに調べ学習のための参考図書を集め,それらにおける文体や構成,テーマや話題,その資料によって想定できる言語活動を検討した。その結果,文体には説明文体,意見文体,物語文体,記録文体,対話文体,会話文体など幾種類もの文体が用いられ,また構成も児童が活用しやすいような工夫があった。また,テーマは多岐にわたり,話題は児童にはかなり難しいことまでまんがの体裁をそって分かりやすく説明されていた。さらに,これらの図書を活用する言語活動には,新聞作り,本作り,研究発表会,パンフレット作りなど多様な活動があり,これを組織することで新しい説明的文章教材の読みの指導が開発できる可能性が確認できた。
