現実のコミュニケーションにおいてノンバーバルなメッセージは重要である。特にインターカルチュラルコミュニケーションの研究では、言語メッセージに偏した現在の研究からノンバーバルコミュニケーションを含んだ研究に変えていく必要があると考えられる。このような現状認識に基づき、日常生活場面におけるノンバーバルコミュニケーションの文化差の存在を確認する研究を展開した。すなわち日常生活場面におけるノンバーバルコミュニケーションの文化差の確認と、それを調べる調査法としてインターネットのWebを利用する調査技法を確立することが目的となる。ノンバーバルコミュニケーションの実体は動画と音声を含めた映像で表現でき、Web上ではこの表現が可能である。さらにインターカルチュラルコミュニケーションという調査対象を考えた時に、将来的な可能性ではあるが、全世界に展開できる調査法となり得る事が考えられる。先行研究から指摘されている動作、目(アイコンタクト)、身体接触、対人空間、時間感覚、パーソナルスペース、マナー、規律、自己表現のスタイル等の文化的差異の具体的事例の映像記録を米国を中心として収集し、特に生活場面において抽出した映像場面を被験者にホームページ上の動画で提示した。調査用ホームページは異文化経験調査ページ、被験者による映像解釈記述ページ、SD法によるイメージ評定ページの3部からなる。調査対象は早稲田大学一般生31名と帰国生32名であった。その結果、各映像場面における一般性と帰国生の気づきの度合いに違いが見られた。これらの差は文化差を感じる度合いの強さに対応したものであると考えられる。帰国生と一般生との海外経験の違いは平均すると数年であり、これらを確実な違いとして見るためには調査対象地域に居住する人との比較調査を展開していく事が必要と考えられる。その点からもこの調査法の改善と利用可能性が期待される。
