Survey Research on the Promotion of Graduate school Reform

University reform has been promoted rapidly at the departmental level since the revision of the Standards for the Establishment of Universities, 1991. Similarly, reform of graduate schools that must keep up with change of society and development of learning has been promoted. The purpose of this research is to know and analyze how the reform of graduate schools in Japan has been promoted in the whole country level.In 1997 We sent the questionnaire to all graduates of all Universities in Japan, in order to know how far objects of revised the Standards for the Establishment of Graduate schools and reports of the University Council are implemented. As a result, We received from as many as 90 percent of all subject.In 1998 We had interview with the graduate schools that made a reform by characteristic or typical methods, 5 examples.Analysis and examination of received questionnaire and interview showed as follows.1.The graduate schools student enrollment is increasing smoothly. however, the number limit of graduate schools is increasing more suddenly than the student enrollment. As a result, the real number of the student lack a quorum in 1997.2.Many graduate schools are positive in reform. However, a number of them have some problems for example to increase a faculty member's burden, and shortage of educational facilities, etc.
