本研究は、公立の舞台芸術施設に対してアンケート調査を行い、最新の舞台芸術施設運営の実態を明らかにするとともに、過去2回の調査と今回の調査に基づく時系列変化を読み取ることを第一の目的とする。また、開示可能なミクロ統計資料として開銀企業財務データを使用し、民間の劇場における経営実態を把握するとともに、舞台芸術施設運営の調査に対する応用可能性を検討することを第二の目的とする。本研究は実質3年度にわたる研究である。公立の舞台芸術施設における不整合な経理処理の実態を解明するという立場から、調査票の経理処理に関する項目の構成を大幅に改めた。調査項目としては、施設の概要、組織の概要、職員数と外部委託業務、ホールの使用時間、ホールの年間利用日数、上演種目別の利用日数と公演回数、自主事業の内容、施設運営の経理、標準的な自主事業の収支の例を設定した。平成8年度にアンケート調査を実施し、平成9年度は主に時系列標本の集計分析を、平成10年度は主に無作為標本の集計分析を行った。この結果、公立の舞台芸術施設における運営の実態を総合的に把握することができた。また、平成10年度には先進的かつ特徴的な施設を幾つかピックアップし、補足的な個別調査を実施した。開銀企業財務データは、一企業あるいは関連企業全体としての決算概要を示したものであり、この中から劇場経営に関する部分を取り出すことはいささか困難であるが、劇場運営を経営の主な基盤とする会社に対して、決算状況を時系列で把握することができた。また、財務諸表のデータ項目を今後のアンケート調査に応用するために、幾つかの知見を得ることができた。
