日本企業の海外直接投資がその研究開発活動にどのような影響を与えるかを検討するために、機械産業の上場企業のパネルデータを使って推定を行った。データは、昨年度の報告で使ったデータに、東洋経済新報社「海外進出企業総覧」から作成した企業の海外事業活動指標を追加したものである。また同時に、対日直接投資が日本企業の研究開発活動に与える影響についての昨年度報告した推定結果を、新しい説明変数として企業の海外事業活動指標を追加した推定式でもう一度検討した。対日直接投資が日本企業の研究開発支出に与える影響については、推定式の説明変数に海外事業活動指標を追加しても、昨年度報告した結果と概ね同様な結果を得た。対日直接投資が日本企業の研究開発支出に与える影響の弾力性の値は、昨年度報告したものよりやや大きな値となったが、依然としてそれほど大きな値ではない。また、電気機械産業では、対日直接投資による外資系企業の研究開発支出の伸びが、日本企業の研究開発支出を減少させる効果を上回るので、国内の電気機械産業全体としてはむしろ研究開発支出額が増加する。日本企業自身の海外直接投資が自社の研究開発支出に与える影響は、プラスの効果が推定された。また、その弾力性を計算すると0.025となり、それほど大きくはない。したがって、近年の日本企業の積極的な海外事業展開を、国内製造業の空洞化として懸念する議論があるが、少なくとも研究開発活動に関する限り、そのような議論は妥当せず、むしろ積極的な海外事業活動が国内の研究開発活動にもプラスの効果を与えていることが分かった。また、理論的には、積極的な海外事業活動にようる市場の確保が、研究開発支出の期待収益率をより高くし、研究開発活動を促進するインセンティブを与えるという考え方を支持する結果となった。
