Project Summary DA/T2 Human Food Product Testing The purpose of this analytical track is to improve food testing surveillance programs through the microbiological analysis of food products. The test results generated by these laboratories can be used to remove adulterated food from commerce and aide regulatory inspection programs in conducting investigations. WI BLS is proposing to test a variety of different matrices over the next five years. The matrices chosen include four that have been implicated in recent outbreaks in Wisconsin, and are therefore of interest to our program, the Division of food and Recreational Safety (DFRS) and well as our states Rapid Response Team, and the Department of Health Services. Also included in the projects are dried herbs, which are a newer commodity, which DFRS would like to compile data on pathogens for a risk assessment. This project not only provides valuable information for WI DFRS, it also provides the valuable data that is the goal of this grant to help strengthen the FDA’s goal of preventing food borne illnesses in human food.
