Microbiology Capability/Capacity Development - Cyclospora
The purpose of this analytical track is to build additional capability and expand the national capacity in
microbiological areas of emerging technology and/or where FDA has identified a specific need.
Goal: Develop the capability to test for Cyclospora in human food product and environmental samples.
Cyclospora is an emerging pathogen of interest in Wisconsin and throughout the US. A dependable
method for recovering the organism in food and water samples does/did not exist until recently, making
the identification of outbreaks related to this organism difficult to assess. FDA has recently come out with
a more dependable method of testing for this organism.
Wisconsin has been involved in two suspected outbreaks of Cyclospora in the past two year, but WI BLS
was unable to do the testing the Division of Food and Recreation safety (DFRS) requested.
WI BLS has already sent one of its staff members, Jay Lee, FERN training on Cyclospora (LB 302). In
addition, he has attended multiple webinar updates on the method.
Cyclospora is a method WI would like to add to its scope. Granting WI BLS this track enhances our ability
to meet DFRS needs, and meets the goal of improved capacity and capabilities as out lined in the grant.
