The IRF established the golden Syrian hamster model which recapitulates lung pathology features of human disease. Cytokine response and antibody response also parallel human disease. Positron emission tomography with computed tomography was incorporated and indicated further support of this model for pre-clinical countermeasure screening. A further experiment using aged hamsters indicated increased disease severity. Aged subjects demonstrated increased lung pathology and more severe weight lost than younger subjects.
