The IRF has established two crab-eating macaque models of COVID-19, intrabronchial exposure and small-particle exposure models. Data from both models support a mild to moderate disease that begins to regress by day 10 post-infection. However, lung pathology, as observed by positron emission tomography with computed tomography (PET/CT) is more severe in small-particle exposed macaques. In both models, lung pathology can be quantified using PET/CT, macaques develop a neutralizing antibody response, and serum cytokine dynamics are similar to what has been observed in humans. The data support that PET/CT or CT alone can be used to quantify disease progression and regression which can be used to evaluate countermeasure safety and efficacy.
