There is an obesity epidemic in the UK with an estimated 63% of the population were overweight, and 27% obese. Obesity is responsible for an estimated 30,000 preventable deaths annually and costs the economy £27 billion per year. Digital behaviour change approaches afford an opportunity to provide every person with personalised, in the moment, nutrition and fitness interventions in their pocket.Effective weight management remains a challenge. Scientific research has robustly shown that conventional dieting or nutrition planning is ineffective, providing only short term success. One reason for this is that tracking energy intake (food) and expenditure (baseline metabolism + movement/exercise) consistently and in combination is currently almost impossible. However, this combination is critical to incur lasting behavior change: behavioral science research demonstrates that in the moment goals, based on actionable real-time data, have better success rates.Hexis Live Energy, the outcome of this project, will transform the way we track and receive actionable feedback on our energy balance (the balance between energy consumed and energy expended) in real-time throughout the day, enabling more effective weight management for the general population as well as top athletes.
